Black
Black Walnut, a rapidly growing tree common in all of Ohio, is most common in moist bottomlands and open fields, but is found everywhere due to squirrels burying its nuts. Black walnut hulls are generally spread out in pastures and fields where they oxidize quickly. In the past, juice made from black walnut hulls has been used as a cosmetic to darken skin. Black walnut still provides a dark coloring agent for hair dyes and long-lasting wood used for rifle stocks. The cosmetics industry uses black walnut hulls for numerous green uses. The hull is used by the cosmetics industry as a natural abrasive. Dried, milled black walnut hulls are also used for self-tanning cosmetics and soaps.
