Colchicine is a toxic natural product and secondary metabolite, originally obtained from plants of the genus Colchicum. It is a drug used to treat and prevent gout, or gouty arthritis. Colchicine is used to alleviate attacks. It is also used to treat a rare condition called familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) in adults and children over 4 years of age. Basically, the colchicine prevents the microtubule formation during cell division, thus the chromosomes do not pull apart like they normally do. The maximum dose of colchicine in an acute attack of gout should be 6mg (10 tablets). Colchicine should be taken at an initial dose of 1.2mg followed by 1 tablet every 2 hours until the gouty pain is relieved, gastrointestinal symptoms develop, or the maximum dose is reached. |
